December 3, 2010
Springdale, Pennsylvania — Sometimes, even painting contractors need electrical safety training. It's a sad and hard lesson learned when you lose an employee and are charged a hefty fine.
Modern Painting and Decorating of Springdale, Pennsylvania, was recently fined $57,900 by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for safety violations following a fatal worker electrocution at a New Kensington worksite. The employee was working on a roof while painting the exterior of a building in April 2010 when he made contact with a high-voltage power line.

Littleport, Ireland — Irrigation pipe hits overhead high voltage line causing severe burns, internal injuries and amputation of toe for farm worker. Farm fined for lack of training and lack of information provided to farm staff and contractors.
A FARM worker spent nine weeks in hospital with severe burns after getting an electric shock while working for a potato grower in Littleport.

BC Power Line Technicians Lead the Pack in Red Seal Rankings
October 29, 2010
We recently came across a posting by Kevin Evans, the CEO of ITA (Industry Training Authority) that showcased British Columbia's top ranking for Red Seal pass rates in the 2009 statistics. Leading the pack for these results were Power Line Technicians with a 96% pass rate-- as EITI is the only training facility to offer Power Line Technician training in BC, this article hit rather close to home. Way to go!!
"We could argue whether British Columbia has Canada's cleverest apprentices or its best training providers, employer sponsors and support form industry, labour and government – or some combination of those.
But there's no arguing the fact that our overall Red Seal Pass rate is head and shoulders above the rest of Canada...BC trades with the highest pass rate last year were Powerline Technician (96 per cent), Metal Fabricator (92 per cent), Construction Electrician (91 per cent), Baker (88 per cent) and Machinist (85 per cent)...."
Practicing Safety First....
October 21, 2010
The hazards on the job when working near high voltage electricity are very real. We recently found a thought provoking article on the unpredictable nature of arc flash— are you prepared?
Practice Safety First Because Arc Flash Has Officially Become Ubiquitous.
The unpredictability of arc flash incidents make them difficult to prevent.
It's been facebooked, tweeted, youtubed, linked in and wikipediaed. And yet, despite its global name recognition, an electrical accident in the workplace kills a worker every 28 hours. According to an IEEE study involving more than 120,000 workers, arc flash was the culprit in more than 75% of those accidents.
